Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Study Project Managers are Stressed and Overworked According toWorkfront’s new Project Management Survey, conducted in late2014with 384 North American PMs, project managers are being inundated with too much work, lack of visibility into the work being done, and the use of disconnected tools to do the work. As a result, they are left without insights into the work they are doing and are stretched too thin. Fifty-five percent of the surveyed PMs said that in 2014, their workload increased significantly, causing 38 percent of project managers to say no to new projects, work overtime, and outsource at least 6-10 hours of work per week. Disparate new tools don’t ease admin pains Surprisingly, nearly a third of the PM workweek is spentupdating project status instead of working on projects. Of the survey respondents, 27 percent listed “project information scattered across too many disconnected tools” as their biggest problem at work. Thirty-three percent arestill using spreadsheets and email to manage their projects, and 18 percent are spending loads of time entering the same data into different systems. While 58 percent of the respondents are using Agile methodologies including Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming, 62 percent stated that more than half of projects are completed using traditional project management methods that may or may not be effective. Sixty-six percent of PMs don’t have a formalrequest management system, so projects come in from all over and are difficult to prioritize and track. All in all, many PMs are so “all over the place” that they aren’t in a position to derive crucial information and take action on it. Lest we chalk these issues up to inexperience, Workfront actually polled animpressive group of PMs. More than half had over 10 years of experience in project management, and 84 percent had completed formal PM training or earnedPM certifications. There are many types of affidavits depending on the circumstances at hand. One example is an Affidavit of Heirship; this is executed by the person who is attesting that the deceased left certain descendants behind. They are the person who is listing them by name and relationship. The document is used when a spouse or close family member dies, and their assets must be distributed to the right individuals. Another example is the Affidavit of Support, which is applicable in immigration proceedings. This type of trust cannot be used with real property; it provides a safer method to distribute assets on to family than using joint ownership. A Totten trust has come to be known as a ‘poor man’s trust’ because a written document is not involved and it has no establishment fee. The third type is the irrevocable trust, which as the name suggests is a trust that cannot be revoked, changed, or altered after it has been created. When property is transferred to an irrevocable trust, nobody, not even the trust maker can take the property out of the trust. The next one is the tax by-pass trust, which is a type of trust that is made to give one spouse the ability to leave money or property to the other while also limiting the amount of federal estate tax that is to be paid when the second spouse passes away. The assets do pass to the spouse tax-free, but when the other spouse dies, then the remaining assets over and above the exempt limit will be eligible for tax to the children of the couple at the potential rate of 55 per cent. A tax by-pass trust helps to prevent this situation and will save the children a potential hundreds of dollars in federal taxes; this is entirely dependent on the values of the estate. Another one is an asset protection trust; it is a type of trust that is designed to protect a person’s assets from claims of future creditors. These types of trusts are often eligible in countries that are outside of the USA; however, the assets do not always need to be transferred to the foreign jurisdiction. The use of the asset protection trust is to insulate assets from a creditor attack. These types of trusts are usually built in a way that they cannot be revoked for a specific term of years; therefore, the trust maker is not a current beneficiary. It is also structured in a way that the undistributed assets of the trust are given back to the trust maker when the trust is terminated. This reduces the risk of creditor attack and will permit the trust maker to take back complete control of the assets that were protected before. The spendthrift trust is a trust that is made for a beneficiary where the beneficiary is prevented from selling or pledging away the interests in the trust. It is protected from the beneficiaries' creditors until the time when the trust property is distributed out of the trust and finally given to the recipients. Another is the charitable trust which is a trust that benefits a given charity or in general, the public. Usually, philanthropic trusts are made as part of an estate plan in order to lower or prevent the imposition of estate and gift tax. A branch of this trust is the charitable remainder trust that is funded during the lifetime of the grantor and can be a financial planning tool. It provides the trust maker with great benefits for the lifetime; together with these financial benefits, they get an intangible benefit of rewarding the trust maker's altruism as charities. They usually honor the donors immediately who have named the charity as the beneficiary of a CRT. The special needs trust is another type that has many aspects and so is very important. This type of trust is established for a person who is eligible to receive benefits from the government so that they do not disqualify the beneficiary from such government benefits. This is a legal proceeding and is protected under the Social Security rules as long as the disabled beneficiary is not able to control the amount or number of times of trust distributions and cannot revoke the trust. Normally, when a person is able to receive governmental benefits, then their inheritance or a gift could remove their eligibility to receive the said benefits. Through establishing a trust which provides for luxuries or other benefits which otherwise could not be obtained by the beneficiary, the beneficiary will be able to get benefits from the trust without taking away their governmental benefits. Typically, a special needs trust terminates the trust in the situation that the trust could be used to make the person ineligible for government benefits through the use of a provision. The legal definition of special needs is the requisites for maintaining the happiness and essential comfort of a disabled person when the said requisites are not being provided by the public or private agency. Special needs include equipment, dental expenses, education, rehabilitation, eyeglasses, insurance, maintenance, electronic and computer equipment, dietary needs, athletic contests, payments for companions, spending money, and transportation that includes vehicle purchase. The parents of a child with disabilities have the authority to establish a special needs trust as part of their estate plan and have not to worry that their child will be prevented from receiving benefits when they are no longer there to provide care for their child. For disabled people who are expecting an inheritance or any other large amount of money are able to set up a special needs trust them as long as another person or entity is given the role of the trustee. 24. When Do You No Longer Need a Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I wondered about this question when I read Penelope Trunk’s comment on Nicole Crimaldi’s blog, Ms. Career Girl. I’m 42 years old. I have had a very successful career, and I can be judged on my track record. So I don’t need a personal brand. So, newsflash, you never hear me writing about my personal brand because I don’t need one. I am not at the beginning of my career, I am not trying to figure out what I stand for. I am not trying to explain to people how they should view me. While I’m normally not a follower of Ms. Trunk, her comment got me thinking: Is there a certain point in life when you no longer need a personal brand? Is it an age, or more of a milestone? I asked this question of my Twitter followers, and @MAltaee responded, “When we die!” Similarly, @Critiques4Geeks said, “For some, reaching that point might not be anytime too soon! Especially re: entrepreneurs, small biz leaders, and C-suite level. Their business identity and persona are very closely linked, so personal branding is very much a part of the picture.” It’s not your age In reading her comment, I don’t believe Ms. Trunk argues she no longer needs a personal brand because of her age, although she does mention she’s 42. Age, in my opinion, is not the sole determiner of whether or not you need to maintain (or create) a personal brand. After all, as Ms. Trunk aptly goes on to point out, she’s already had a successful career. It’s a milestone â€" that you set Although “when we die” might be a little extreme, I am going to respectfully disagree with Ms. Trunk about the fact that she doesn’t need a personal brand at this point in her life. While I don’t know her â€" at all â€" I’m willing to bet she still has plenty of future plans. But the good news is, even though she might not be writing about her personal brand, she’s been living it. She makes some very important points about when it might be useful to create a personal brand: at the beginning of your career or when you’re trying to establish yourself as an expert. And she’s right â€" she’s not at either of those points. However, as long as you still have a career-related goal to accomplish, regardless of your age, I argue that personal branding is still valuable. Is Age Really Just a Number - Jane Jackson Career I truly believe that age is just a number. Dont believe me? Heres a true story.I greeted a new client in my reception area one afternoon. There he was, dressed in a Fedora hat, white tee shirt and a pair of tight, black jeans. I extended my hand to greet him; he stood up and towered over me while telling me his name was Graeme.‘Tall,’ I thought. ‘Firm handshake,’ I noticed when we shook hands.I guided him to my office for our consultation. He followed closely, with long, confident strides, making interesting small talk.‘Energetic,’ I thought.I didn’t think about his age until we sat opposite each other in my consulting room and he removed his trendy hat. I noticed his well tanned; weather beaten face etched with interesting lines that suggested an outdoors life well lived. I guessed his age to be about 58.I needed some details from Graeme for my New Client Form and he said, “I should let you know I’m 72.” I nearly fell out of my chair! How could this fit, vibrant and confident man be 72? He didn’t fit my preconceived ideas about 70 year olds.Herein lies the problem. Too many of us have preconceived ideas about age. The Australian Human Rights Commission recently released their  Willing To Work Inquiry into Age Discrimination in the Workplace.According to Australia’s Age and Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Susan Ryan, “The right to work is a fundamental human right, but one that far too many older people and people with disability in Australia do not enjoy.”This inquiry found that at the beginning of 2016 there were 80,000 unemployed Australians over the age of 55. That’s 12% more than 2015. This number is believed to be partially due to age discrimination in the workplace.The Australian Government is taking steps to encourage older workers AND employers to embrace age and maturity as a positive and provide the opportunity for those who are in their 60’s and even 70’s should they choose to work, to have an equal chance o f securing a role for which they are well qualified. However it’ll be a long process.So, what are we to do if we are part of the aging workforce?With over 15 years as a career coach and having coached numerous clients through what for some, regardless of age, has been a very challenging process to secure another job, I believe that rather than waiting for an employer to ‘pick you’, you should ‘pick yourself’!Yes, pick yourself to contribute to the community â€" set up a new business, buy an existing business, buy a franchise or leverage your years of experience, knowledge, technical expertise and well cultivated network to create your own venture! Heres how you can do itIt won’t be easy and it won’t be for everyone but it is an option. It’s not the easy way; it’s an exciting, challenging way and a darn sight better than sitting at home blaming ageism in the workplace for your sorrows.You’re probably wondering what happened to Graeme. After I recovered my composur e when he told me he was 72, I mistakenly mentioned the words ‘retirement options‘. He put his hand on the table, looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘Jane, my dear, do I look like the retiring kind?’With his energy and attitude he most certainly didn’t. One page resumes One Page Résumés Need to go Away One page résumés need to die? Stop the presses! Did that headline just say what I thought it said? YES. ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY. And unequivocally. Unfortunately, this one-pager myth keeps getting perpetuated by well-intentioned yet hopelessly outdated career centers advising people to keep it short and sweet. But the real problem lies in the fact that in containing a compelling work history to only a single page, many people don’t really get to tell the whole story. So how many pages should you have? Two pages for professionals, but three pages are acceptable for CEOs, scientists, educators, or technical people. What changed? Understanding the hiring manager / recruiter / headhunter perspective is key. They are willing to keep reading if you are providing meaningful and meaty content. Don’t blather on to fill pages. But if you do have a lot of accomplishments, the reader will gladly keep going so they get a better sense of what it is you have to offer. Recently, I met with Derek Zeller, who is a well-respected recruiter nationally who also is a contributing writer for Recruiting Daily. I posed the following question to him: “What is one of your biggest pet peeves as a recruiter?” The first thing he said was that people who only provide one page résumés drive him crazy. So go ahead. You have permission. TAKE 2 PAGES. The more information you provide that is helpful for making the business case for hiring you, the GREATER your odds are of being selected for the next step. Period. As always, provide measurable results to demonstrate HOW you made a difference at the company, and therefore moved the needle forward. Remember, recruiters are parsing your résumé to find out how you made a difference at a company as a basis to gauge what you might be able to do for the job opening. So take the space, but make sure you curate it carefully.
